The Boondock Saints is an entertaining and yet incredibly flawed movie. The two main characters are the McManus brothers. From the start we don't know much about them. We know that they're Irish, they like to drink, they like to fight and they work in a meat plant. Oh wait, they also speak five languages …and yet they work in a meat plant. St. Patty's Day gets off to a rough start when the two of them get in a fight with a big, man-hating lesbian at their job. What do we know about this woman? Well, she's big, she hates men and she's a lesbian. But the trouble really starts for the brothers when three big, angry Russian gangsters walk into their bar. We don't know much about these guys either. We know that they're big, they're angry, they're Russian and they're gangsters. A fight ensues where one of the big Russians gets tied to a bar and his ass lit on fire. The next day, the McManus brothers seem quite surprised when the Russians break into their loft seeking revenge. After all, it was only a bar fight. To cut to the chase, the brothers receive a message from God and they determine that it is their divine mission to become vigilante gangster killers. They are delighted when they gain access to a small arsenal of guns. We don't know if they have a history of handling guns, but hey, they're Irish and they like to fight, so why wouldn't they like guns? As wellgoing after Russian gangsters, they go after Italian gangsters led by a powerful crime boss. What do we know about this guy? Well, we know that he's Italian, he likes salami sandwiches and he's a crime boss. <br/><br/>We do have the pleasure of meeting at least one complex character in this movie. Willem Dafoe plays a closeted gay FBI agent who is a genius investigator. Unfortunately, he really can't save this movie. One of the biggest problems with Saints is not what we see, but what we DON'T see. The brothers talk about the lack of justice in the world and the victimization of innocent people. So naturally, they go after guys who have victimized innocent people, right? Well… actually we don't really know if they've hurt innocent people. I mean, the guys they kill are gangsters so we can assume they've hurt people, but we never see them do that. As a result, the act of killing these men feels like a hollow achievement. Perhaps we should despise these evil men, but we don't. How can we despise men who we know NOTHING about? We're introduced to a particular group of men about to be killed by our heroes. The men are sitting and talking in a hotel room. What have they done to deserve death? Umm… they're sitting and talking in a hotel room. Our heroes go to a porn show where a few gangsters watch a stripper. What have they done to deserve death? Umm… they're watching a stripper. <br/><br/>But the really big problem I have with this movie is one that admittedly doesn't say anything about the quality of the film. This movie is set in Boston. So where is the Irish mob??? If these brothers are so righteous in their pursuit of justice, why only go after the Italians and Russians? A more interesting movie would have involved the brothers being recruited by Irish mobsters only for the two of them to turn on them,wellkill the local Russians and Italians. Thena result of their killing spree, three rival gangs share a common goal of catching and killing two vigilantes. Saints is not without its moments and writer/director Troy Duffy is capable of writing some good scenes. But creatively, he gets away with murder.
There seems to be quite a bit of hate among the user reviews. Mostly to the tune of not only insulting the film but insulting the intelligence of those that do enjoy it.<br/><br/>This is most certainly not the best movie I've ever seen nor does it deserve the praiseone of the "greats" because this doesn't even crack my top 20 action movies.<br/><br/>All that being considered, you have to look at many things. Every character in this movie is clearly meant to be a caricature, hence their extreme outlandishness. Secondly, no matter what your feelings on religion in general it is perfectly reasonable for it to exist and be quite real in the world of a film (while I don't think that was the intention films are open for interpretation). So that being said the scene where they fall from the vent and make 8 extremely well placed shots, and the voice-over of scripture(I believe it is scripture) saysmuch, can be taken that they are actually being protected by their faith.<br/><br/>Moving on, most of the complaints ring pretty true. The acting is average at best, the brothers accents sound like the lucky charms leprechaun, the dialogue is idiotic, the whole flashback to the murders gets old, and it has plenty of glaring plot-holes. However, I do find the movie entertaining for the most part, particularly the scene where Willem Dafoe's character is "there" while he recounts the poker game murders. If only for the same reason that I am able to enjoy any popcorn film (like say Transformers), because after I watch a heavy film (ex. 2001, Apocalypse Now, Manchurian Candidate(1962), the list could go on and on) I enjoy watching something less involving.<br/><br/>I would have to say this movie is a 6/10. It's far from the worst I've ever seen or even the worst ever made. Anyone that says so has clearly never heard of Mystery Science Theater 3000 haha(yes those are real movies). This is not a must see, I could easily come up with 100 other movies you should invest time in before this one, but it is fun if you can give you're discerning film loving mind a rest for about 2 hours.<br/><br/>If you've read this far forgive me. This is my first review and I did not give much time for compiling my thoughts and just wrote.
(Duffy) navigates the twisted collision of religious faith and the thrill of the kill, altruism and brutality, with an ingenious mix of humor, horror, mysticism, and just plain hipness.
Although the film never explicitly states it, it's pretty clear that Agent Smecker is gay. The fact that he is intimate with another man in the film is pretty clear evidence. He also attends a gay bar for his drinking binge. However, this doesn't stop him from being rather belligerent towards other gay men and calling them 'fag' or 'fairy'. To put it simply the Unrated version features several extended action sequences and bloody shootouts that are missing in the R-rated version of the movie. You can find a detailed comparison between both versions with pictures here. Yes, he is their father. He knows the prayer that was passed down to them from their father and their father's father. He takes the 'In nómine Patris' part of the prayer, which means 'In the name of the Father.' The benediction he gives them (raising his hands in the sign of the cross over Murphy and Connor) is only appropriate for a priest…or a parent. Also, at the very end (after the courtroom scene), Connor calls him 'Da'. Il Duce was hired to kill the vigilantes, however, he didn't realize that they were his children, nor did Connor and Murphy realize that Il Duce was their father. It wasn't until Il Duce was about to ambush them at the end, when he overheard them saying their family prayer, that he obviously realized would be too much of a coincidence for someone else to know. Also, he knew he fathered twin sons; they just haven't seen each other for about 25 years. In the opening of the film, the brothers are in church praying when the priest begins talking about a victim named Kitty Genovese who was killed a long time ago in the middle of day and everyone watched but did not respond and about the indifference of good men towards evil. After hearing this, Connor states, "I do believe the monseigneur's finally got the point", to which Murphy responds, "Aye." Later on, its Saint Patrick's day and the brothers are at a bar drinking when three Russian gangsters come in and state that they will close the bar, but the brothers don't allow them, to which a fight begins between them, to which the Russians are left badly wounded. As the brothers rest in their apartment, the Russians come back and threaten the brothers. Connor is handcuffed to a toilet while Murphy is taken outside to be shot in the head. Connor, out of rage, breaks the toilet apart and throws it down the complex and hits the Russian, killing him. Connor jumps on the other Russian, to which Murphy finishes him off. The brothers go to the police station to prove that it was self-defense. Meanwhile, the police let them stay in a holding cell to avoid the media. While sleeping, water falls from the crack of the ceiling onto their bodies, symbolizing baptism and forgiven sin. The brothers realize this and say to each other, "Destroy that which is evil so that which is good may flourish." The brothers take the money and jewelry they took from the Russians they encountered and buy guns. Seeing all the sin that has went on, violence, drug use, rape, thievery, they swear that they will execute all evil men who have done sin in order that peace and goodness can be restored and evil can be stopped. On Murphy's hand it says "Veritas" meaning Truth and on Conner's hand it says "Aequitas" meaning Justice
